Therapy for depression and low mood

When low mood persists, even ordinary tasks can begin to feel heavy. Therapy offers a confidential space to understand what lies behind the way you are feeling.

When feeling low becomes difficult to carry

Low mood can take many forms. You may feel sad, empty or disconnected, but you may also notice irritability, tiredness, self-criticism or a loss of interest in things that once mattered. Some people continue to function outwardly while feeling increasingly withdrawn inside.

Depression is not a sign of weakness, and it does not always have one obvious cause. It may develop after a loss, disappointment or major change, or emerge gradually after a long period of pressure, loneliness or emotional strain.

Common experiences

  • persistent sadness, emptiness or numbness
  • loss of motivation, pleasure or hope
  • fatigue and difficulty completing everyday tasks
  • withdrawing from relationships or activities
  • harsh self-criticism, guilt or feelings of worthlessness
  • changes in sleep, appetite or concentration

How psychodynamic therapy may help

Therapy provides room to speak about experiences that may have been carried alone or pushed aside. We can explore how you relate to yourself, what has been lost or left unresolved, and whether familiar patterns in relationships contribute to feelings of hopelessness or disconnection.

The aim is not to offer quick reassurance or pressure you to “think positively”. It is to develop a fuller understanding of your emotional life and create the conditions for movement, connection and choice to return gradually.

When additional support may be needed

Depression can sometimes involve thoughts of self-harm or not wanting to be alive. If you are in immediate danger, contact emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department. Therapy can form part of your support, and in some situations collaboration with a psychiatrist or doctor may also be appropriate.

Your first session

You can begin by describing how life has felt recently and what has become hardest to manage. We will consider your needs, any support you already have and whether regular therapy with me would be an appropriate next step.

Taking the first step

You can arrange an initial appointment to talk about what is bringing you to therapy and whether this approach feels right for you.
